Student use of library furniture

Dear Colleagues

While we are happy for the students to use library desks to spread out when doing projects, it is really unacceptable for them to cut without cutting mats, and to use spray mount. The desks are becoming badly scratched and stained.

We would be very grateful if you could remind the students that cutting mats are available from the library counter and that bins are provided for the debris.

Exhibition at Cornerhouse

It has recently been discovered that humans are closer to higher primates than was previously thought. This exhibition brings together a group of artists who actively question the authority of the human species over all other animal species.
Four artists present specially commissioned projects developed with animals. Nicolas Primat presents his work involving interactions with tribes of monkeys and bonobo apes, in which he reveals the hidden non-human primate in all of us. Kira O’Reilly, in her special performance for Cornerhouse and installation, Falling Asleep with a Pig, allows a glance at an intimate relationship between her and a female pig known as Deliah. Antony Hall’s interactive work, ENKI experiment 3, explores communication between visitors and a Black Ghost Knife Fish. Ruth Maclennan presents, The Hawk and the Tower, a film that looks at people, the city and the landscape from the perspective of a ‘hawk-camera.’
Also included in the exhibition are Rachel Mayeri’s Primate Cinema, which casts human actors in the role of mating non-human primates and Beatriz da Costa’s PigeonBlog, which investigates the military use of homing pigeons.

Film and Sound Online

I wanted to bring your attention to an excellent electronic resource (provided free as it is JISC funded) that seems to be rather underused.
Film & Sound Online is a JISC-funded set of collections of film, video and sound material. Several hundred hours of high-quality material are available for download, either in full or as segments, and can be used freely in learning, teaching and research.
Please have a look and recommend it to your students, if it would be useful. You will need an Athens account to access it so let me know if you need to set one it.

Magnificence of the Zsars - Victoria and Albert

I went to this exhibition on Sunday. It is quite a small collection but remarkable as it is curated and mounted by the Moscow Kremlin Museums.

This exhibition illustrates Russia’s relationship with her past and with Europe through two centuries of men’s court dress.
The Moscow Kremlin Museums, together with the Armoury Chamber, form Russia’s oldest national treasury, founded in 1806. Their collections include the dress and regalia worn by the emperors and the Russian court from the 1720s to 1917. This exhibition focuses on men’s dress, particularly the coronation dress of the emperor and other participants in ceremonies at court

Chelsea College of Art and Tate Libraries

I recently visited the Chelsea College of Art and Design library and the Tate Library. They are both part of SCONUL ACCESS - although the Tate only allows staff and PHDs to borrow. However, any member of the public can register as reader and have reference access.

Both libraries have amazing collections and are happy to have our students visit. I would always advise a phone call first since most materials have to be retrieved from storage.

Mark Rothko Exhibition Tate Modern

Tate Modern presents an exhibition by one of the world’s most famous and best-loved artists, Mark Rothko. This is the first significant exhibition of his work to be held in the UK for over 20 years.
Tate Modern's iconic 'Rothko Room' works are reunited for the first time with works from Japan. The Seagram Murals were originally commissioned for The Four Seasons Restaurant in the Seagram Building New York.
Rothko’s iconic paintings, composed of luminous, soft-edged rectangles saturated with colour, are among the most enduring and mysterious created by an artist in modern times. In the exhibition his paintings glow meditatively from the walls in deep dark reds, oranges, maroons, browns, blacks, and greys.
The exhibition will also focus on other work in series, such as the Black-Form paintings, his large-scale Brown and Grey works on paper, and his last series of Black on Grey paintings, created in the final decade of his life from 1958-1970.

I recently visited the National Art Library at the V&A and I will be encouraging our students to go there.

The National Art Library at the Victoria and Albert Museum is a majorpublic reference library. Its strength lies in the range and depth of its holdings of documentary material concerning the fine and decorativearts of many countries and periods. It is also the curatorial departmentfor the art, craft and design of thebook, details of which can be found in the Prints & Books collection.

It is such a stunning library with unique resources - including many databases which our students can use. They even offer user education sessions on Tuesday.

Images of Medieval Manuscripts from Leeds University Library

Some 685 digital images from our medieval illuminated manuscripts are now
available online: http://ludos.leeds.ac.uk/collection/medmss. Twenty-seven
different manuscripts have been drawn on for the project, including four from
Ripon Cathedral Library (held at Leeds University Library). Apart from the Hours
associated with the Bedford Master Workshop (Brotherton Collection MS 1),
the Genealogical History Roll (Brotherton Collection MS 100) and one small
fragment, which have been photographed in full, the manuscripts are
represented selectively, but all miniatures and all significant illuminated borders
and initials have been included.

New Olympic Archive for UEL

We have just been successful in securing £100K from the Joint Information Systems Committee for a one-year project to create a digital Olympics Archive. Our archive will be called East London Lives – a unique digital archive of ‘London 2012’. It will record and reflect on the process of social change in East London arising from hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games, focusing on two of the key Olympic promises - social regeneration and health and wellbeing.
It is a joint bid between three parts of our university - the London East Research Institute (Professor Gavin Poynter and Dr Iain Macrury), the Institute of Health and Human Development (Professor Adrian Renton) and Library and Learning Services. Our partner is the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council.

Although aimed primarily at art and design librarians, this course has plenty to offer librarians in all subject areas, and will stimulate ideas for your own work with students.

This conference is about the status and role of early printed images in Britain
in books and elsewhere. There is an international line up of speakers.
Printed images were widely circulated in early modern Britain and they provide
vivid and revealing evidence about many aspects of the culture of the period.
Yet only recently have historians begun to give them proper attention, and
this conference will be one of the first to draw out their significance. Themes
will include the importance of printed images for the history of the Reformation
and post-Civil War politics, the emergence of new genres like topographical
engraving and mezzotint, and the place of prints in the developing consumer
market. Speakers will include Kevin Sharpe, Anthony Griffiths, John King, Justin
Campion, Michael Hunter and Alex Walsham.
The conference is linked to, and will showcase, an innovative project in the
form of the AHRB-funded British Printed Images to 1700 project, which will
make available pre-1700 prints in the British Museum and selected material
from the V&A and other collections.

Royal Academy of Arts Collections Online: Historic Books, Archives, Works of Art

We are delighted to announce the launch of the new version on the online catalogue to the Royal Academy of Arts Permanent Collections: www.racollection.org.uk


The RA Collections website enables you to search and explore the RA’s collections of paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, historic books, archives, historic photographs and plaster casts. There are specific search screens for searching the works of art, books or archive collections, or if you select Search all the Collections you can search across everything in the collection at once.

It is also possible to browse the collections via the Names A-Z and Academicians links. Clicking on the Academicians link brings up an alphabetical list of all past and present Royal Academicians. Clicking on a name in the list brings up a Member’s page containing biographical information about the artist or architect, including any posts they held within the RA, plus a list of all the works of art, historic books and archival documents relating to them in the Collection.

The Names A-Z section lists the names of all the people and organisations associated with objects, books and documents in the Collections. Clicking on a name will take you to the page that displays all the records in the Collection associated with that person or institution.

As well as searching and browsing the Collection, you can explore different themes within the Collections or find out what works from the Collection are currently on display in the Royal Academy via the Topics section.

Group for Learning in Art and Design Conference

The GLAD (Group for Learning in Art and Design) conference 2008 will take place at Nottingham Trent University on the 8th/ 9th September. The theme of the conference is 'The Student Experience in Art and Design Higher Education: Action for Change. The conference will draw on themes identified at the Cambridge conference in 2007and explore implications for future policy and practice in art and design education. Keynote speakers will explore what art and design can learn from student surveys, as well as the future challenges and opportunities facing the sector.

The Central Saint Martins Museum and Study Collection has added a further 400 images from its historic collections to vads.ac.uk. This outstanding collection includes works by many well-known early staff and students, such as William Lethaby, John Farleigh, Noel Rooke, Cecil Collins, William Newland, Eric Gill, Edward Johnston, Jeannetta Cochrane, Joyce Clissold, and many others.The digitised collection consists of a wide range of material including: fine art, ceramics, lettering and calligraphy, prints, theatrical costume design, textiles, books printed and bound in the Central School, German film posters, Japanese prints, and a collection of illustrated books used as teaching examples.The museum has its roots in the Teaching Examples Collection which was established by the first principal of the Central School, William Lethaby. The museum now aims to collect work by former staff and students of Central Saint Martins and the two founding colleges: The Central School of Arts and Crafts, later Design, and St Martin's School of Art.Over 1700 works from the museum are now available to view online at VADS. European Comic Art is the first English-language scholarly publication devoted to the study of European-language graphic novels, comic strips, comic books and caricature. Published in association with the American Bande Dessinée Society and the International Bande Dessinée Society, European Comic Art builds on existing scholarship in French-language comic art and will be able to draw on the scholarly activities undertaken by both organisations.
European Comic Art is available in both print and online form and will serve as a forum where different theoretical and critical approaches, as well as national comics traditions, can meet.
We would particularly welcome articles in these areas:
The current 'manga-isation' of the European comics scene by Asian comics
Mutual influences of French and American comics
Feminist comic art and women cartoonists
Comics without words
Hergé and the clear-line school of cartooning
Cartoonist collectives and independent publishers since 1990
Genre and the Industry

Dear Colleague,
This message regards the use of Class Accounts with Digimap. Please pass it on
to anyone you think may need this information.
Following the authentication management changes which will occur on 1 August
2008, it will no longer be possible to register for class use of Digimap. All
access to Digimap will be by individual registration only.
As you will know, access to Digimap will be via the UK federation only from 1
August 2008. UK federation rules do not permit more than one person to access
any resource under the same set of credentials. In addition, institutions
subscribing to any Digimap Collection (except Historic Digimap) must assert
"user accountability". This means that the institution is able to trace
activity in any given session to an individual. This is not possible if user
identiifers (which are used to authenticate sessions within online resources)
are shared between individuals, as they would be if using a class account.
Please bear in mind that at busy times of year it may take longer than usual to
process individual registrations. Please ask your students to register in good
time if they need access for the purposes of a class exercise on a particular
day.

In celebration of the Stanley Kubrick season on Channel 4, we are holding a number of public open days at the University of the Arts London's Archives and Special Collections Centre. Spaces are limited and therefore booking is essential. The dates and times are as follows:

Directed by Prof. Ching-chih Chen of Simmons College, Boston and supported by the NSF/International Digital Library Program (IDLP), Global Memory Net (GMNet) is intended to be a model global digital library of cultural, historical, and heritage image collections. Much of these unique collections of great value to education and research are not currently accessible due to distance, form, and technical barriers. This project is to find new ways to enable users to access and exploit these significant collections via global network. Each collaborator of this complimentary and synergetic group possesses experience, knowledge, expertise, and capability in different but related research area(s). Each contributes either part of its superb culture and heritage collection, or cutting-edge techniques to facilitate the image retrieval.
GMNet is also a gateway to world invaluable resources. Over 2400 digital collections from over 80 countries were identified and integrated with the current GMNet collections for instant retrieval

Iconic poster archive launched online

VADS is pleased to announce that a stunning collection of posters by Tom Eckersley has been digitized and is now available online at vads.ac.ukEckersley is one of the foremost poster designers and graphic communicators of the last century. He used bold simple designs, often resembling collage, and the collection reflects the range of his work from propaganda posters to his post-war posters. The collection was formed by Eckersley and is held at the University of the Arts London Archives and Special Collections Centre.Eckersley's bold, graphic statements coupled with memorable slogans and unique use of colour, were seen promoting some of the most iconic of British institutions such as London Transport, General Post Office, The Ministry of Information and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA). Eckersley was also a teacher of poster arts and established the first graphic design course in Britain at the London School/College of Printing (now College of Communication, part of University of the Arts London).Over 100 posters are now available online from this unique archive and further images will be launched on VADS in the coming months.The collection complements other resources on vads.ac.uk such as the Imperial War Museum's poster collection which includes works by Eckersley and his contemporaries such as F H K Henrion and Abram Games.For more information about the Eckersley Archive, see vads.ac.uk/collections/TEC

Year 7 students worked with artists Jeremy Wood and Agnes Poitevin-Navarre to produce Personal Cartographies, part of Iniva's Mapping Beyond exhibition series at Rivington Place.
The students explored their personal geographies and history through a series of discussions and exercises with the artists.
They mapped their everyday activities, located family connections to national boundaries, thought about their tastes, hobbies, passions, their family roots and how the ethnicity of their friends is perceived.

I attend the above show on Saturday. Very impressive range of work but perhaps too large and varied to form one exhibit.

My favourite part was looking at the very old 19th century photographs and seeing faces that you would see on the streets today. It brought the exhibit to life for me.

Marcello Mastroianni retrospective 11th- 24th April at Ciné lumière

This retrospective, organised by The Italian Cultural Institute in London and the Institut français, brings together a handful of the actor’s finest performances, including La dolce vita, La notte, La Grande bouffe and several in films rarely seen outside Italy: Il bell’Antonio (1960), Una giornata particolare (1977). It also includes the actor’s first English-language role, in John Boorman’s Leo the Last (1970), City of Women (1980), and his late performance in Sostiene Pereira, the 1996 adaptation of Antonio Tabucchi’s novel, released just a year before the actor’s death. The Season is organised in collaboration with The Italian Cultural Institute in London and Cinécittà Holdings.

UEL Plus Maintenance 5:00pm 11th April 2008

In response to recent unscheduled downtime there will be some configuration changes to UEL Plus at 5:00 pm on Friday 11th April 2008. This will require a restart of the system so please be aware that the UEL Plus system will be off line for approximately 30 minutes, 5:00 - 5:30 pm.
All users should try to be logged out from UEL Plus at 5:00 pm on Friday as this will expedite the system restart.
The VLE Development Team apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

GreenFILE, a bibliographic database addedd to EBSCOhost

The complimentary database ‘GreenFILE’ has been added to our EBSCO host database profile. It can be accessed by selecting EBSCO from the database list page on campus at: http://www.uel.ac.uk/lss/databases/databaselist.htm#e and is accessible off campus via Athens username and password through EBSCO.

GreenFILE indexes scholarly and general interest titles, as well as government documents and reports. This resource offers a unique perspective on the positive and negative ways humans affect the environment.
