We have put together some short audio clips in mp3 format as a basic introduction to the services provided by the Library and Learning Services. Avant Garde study day at the British Library 4th February

Join leading academics to explore topics including Dada, Futurism, Avant Garde publishing, Avant Garde under dictatorships and how Avant Garde ideas have fed the growth of the internet. Speakers include: Dawn Ades, Günter Berghaus, Andrew Webber, Michael Berkowitz, Frank Whitford and Charlie Leadbetter.This Study Day accompanies the current British Library exhibition Breaking the Rules: The Printed Face of the European Avant Garde 1900-1937 and has been organised in partnership with the Institute of Germanic & Romance Studies. The Art Of Spain new 3-part series on BBC Four


The BBC devotes an entire series to the history of Spanish art. Critic and art historian Andrew Graham-Dixon travels from southern to northern Spain to tell the story of some of Europe's most exciting and vital art, which is often overshadowed by that of Italy.

Photostore visual database


Photostore is the Crafts Council's unique visual database. It features more than 60,000 images representing over 1,000 of the UK's top designer-makers, making Photostore an invaluable tool for commissioning and researching contemporary craft. Photographing the changing face of the East End


A collection of images of London's East End, captured by award-winning photographer Paul Trevor, are now available to view online at VADS: http://www.vads.ahds.ac.uk/search.php


Academics and artists at London Metropolitan University have been working with photographer Paul Trevor to make a selection of his images of East London digitally available to artists, students and researchers. The Collection includes 500 images (chosen from a total of 120,000) of the Spitalfields area from the 1970s to the 1990s, a period of rapid social and physical change.

New Views 2: Conversations and Dialogues in Graphic Design

New Views 2 seeks to look in depth at the broader questions that graphic designers are facing today in terms of the profession and educational practices. At the same time, the symposium is meant to generate debate and to identify what new challenges might lay ahead for practitioners, academics, industry and the profession overall. http://www.newviews.co.uk/

An accompanying exhibition of posters from designers, students and academics opens in London 9th - 21st July, 2008 and then travels to RMIT, Australia. A digital exhibition will also be presented via the conference website.

Frederick Parker Chair Collection launched online


A unique collection of chairs amassed by Frederick Parker & Sons, later Parker Knoll Ltd, has been fully catalogued and digitised and is now available to view online at VADS: http://www.vads.ahds.ac.uk/collections/FPC.html

The chair collection demonstrates 350 years of British chair design and manufacture. They are part of the Frederick Parker Collection that also includes a collection of carvings and the Frederick Parker Company archive.
