Dear Colleagues

Since we do have to spend the remainder of the book funds by the end of May, this is my last request for book orders for this semester.

We will receive the new budget on August 1st and will be able to start buying once again.

Textile tours at V & A

I was at the V & A on Saturday and one of the guides told me that special visits could be arrange for groups to view the extensive textile collection, and even focus on particular time periods.

Digimap Update

On Tuesday 7 April 2009, EDINA will be undertaking essential maintenance on the
servers which run Digimap.
In order to minimise disruption to the service, there will be two short periods
of downtime on this day (rather than a single long period of downtime) These
periods of downtime will be between 08:00 - 08:45 AND 17:30 - 20:00. All
Digimap Collections will be unavailable during these times.
EDINA will also be making use of the 'at risk' period on Tuesday 14 April 2009,
to carry out further essential maintenance. All Digimap Collections will be
unavailable between 17:30 - 18:30.

The Librarians Information Literacy Annual Conference

My colleague,Simone Okolo,and I present at paper at the The Librarians Information Literacy Annual Conference (LILAC) in Cardiff last week. The subject was the Staff Questionnaire which some of you participated in last year.

We felt that it had been a useful iniative, which had really improved communication with our Schools, and would be something that other university libraries would be interested in doing.

Our session was well attended and we got some very good feedback.

World Advertising Research Centre

I wanted to bring your attention to another excellent electronic resource to which we have access. It is mostly used by advertising students but it does have articles regarding fashion brands and includes full text articles and case studies.

It is available from the Database A to Z list on our library homepage and does require an Athens account is used off campus.

Student use of library furniture

Dear Colleagues

While we are happy for the students to use library desks to spread out when doing projects, it is really unacceptable for them to cut without cutting mats, and to use spray mount. The desks are becoming badly scratched and stained.

We would be very grateful if you could remind the students that cutting mats are available from the library counter and that bins are provided for the debris.

The Visual Arts Data Service (VADS) provides a central resource of over 100,000 high quality digital images, which are copyright cleared and completely FREE for use in UK education and personal research.

You are cordially invited to the website launch of the East London Theatre Archive (ELTA). A JISC-funded digital archive featuring material from V&A Theatre Collections, Hackney empire, Half Moon Young People's Theatre, Hoxton Hall, Theatre Royal Stratford East, Theatre Venture and Wilton's Music Hall. There is no admission fee, and lunch plus refreshments will be provided free of charge.

Exhibition at Cornerhouse

It has recently been discovered that humans are closer to higher primates than was previously thought. This exhibition brings together a group of artists who actively question the authority of the human species over all other animal species.
Four artists present specially commissioned projects developed with animals. Nicolas Primat presents his work involving interactions with tribes of monkeys and bonobo apes, in which he reveals the hidden non-human primate in all of us. Kira O’Reilly, in her special performance for Cornerhouse and installation, Falling Asleep with a Pig, allows a glance at an intimate relationship between her and a female pig known as Deliah. Antony Hall’s interactive work, ENKI experiment 3, explores communication between visitors and a Black Ghost Knife Fish. Ruth Maclennan presents, The Hawk and the Tower, a film that looks at people, the city and the landscape from the perspective of a ‘hawk-camera.’
Also included in the exhibition are Rachel Mayeri’s Primate Cinema, which casts human actors in the role of mating non-human primates and Beatriz da Costa’s PigeonBlog, which investigates the military use of homing pigeons.

Film and Sound Online

Dear Colleagues
I wanted to bring your attention to an excellent electronic resource (provided free as it is JISC funded) that seems to be rather underused.
Film & Sound Online is a JISC-funded set of collections of film, video and sound material. Several hundred hours of high-quality material are available for download, either in full or as segments, and can be used freely in learning, teaching and research.
Please have a look and recommend it to your students, if it would be useful. You will need an Athens account to access it so let me know if you need to set one it.

Fashion Diversity 2009

Fashion Diversity returns to Museum of London during London Fashion Week September 2009. Next year's event launches on Thursday 17th September with a series of industry led workshops, culminating in an exclusive gala show for press, buyers and an invitation extended to workshop participants.Friday 18th & Saturday 19th will see the doors open to the public to attend the FREE catwalk shows offering a unique opportunity to see some of London and the UK's most innovative and directional emerging and established talents. This is definitely an event not to be missed!

Magnificence of the Zsars - Victoria and Albert

I went to this exhibition on Sunday. It is quite a small collection but remarkable as it is curated and mounted by the Moscow Kremlin Museums.

This exhibition illustrates Russia’s relationship with her past and with Europe through two centuries of men’s court dress.
The Moscow Kremlin Museums, together with the Armoury Chamber, form Russia’s oldest national treasury, founded in 1806. Their collections include the dress and regalia worn by the emperors and the Russian court from the 1720s to 1917. This exhibition focuses on men’s dress, particularly the coronation dress of the emperor and other participants in ceremonies at court
