The UEL library is hosting an event based around our Info Skills online tutorial

Going it alone: innovations in information literacy

“Info skills”, a new and very successful online tool produced at UEL, has attracted a lot of interest - both within UEL and further afield. Join us in a one day conference to find out about how the site was developed and how it is being used within our institution. The day also includes a keynote speech from Andrew Walsh of Huddersfield University, who will share some insights into innovations in information literacy. Andrew is a National Teaching Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and is well known for using mobile technology in original and inventive ways. He is also currently working on an exciting project that brings fun and games into libraries and information skills.
We are able to stage this conference through the kind assistance from the University Colleges and Research Group (UC+R) which earlier this year granted their Innovations Award to our project.

Arts on Film Archive offers on-line access to a large range of films on art produced in the United Kingdom since the 1950s, and is a unique record of British and international post-war art, as well as of documentary film-making in the UK. Many titles in the collection contain rare material about individual artists, while others offer definitive coverage of their subject. The archive is an invaluable primary research resource for a wide range of scholars in arts and humanities. Its films contain valuable source material for biographies, monographs, and many other forms of research in art history and documentary film-making. Due to copy right restrictions the Arts Council England films can only be streamed to ac.uk domain addresses. The Artist in the library - free symposium at UEL

Library and Learning Services, in collaboration with Clare Qualmann from the Institute of Performing Arts, is organising the following symposium to be held on Friday 3rd June 2011 from 1pm to 5pm in Docklands. The event is free so the places are booking fast.

The Artist in the Library
A free half-day symposium organised by the Institute for Performing Arts Development (IPAD), and Library and Learning Services at the University of East London.

The symposium reflects on the relationships between artists and libraries; how their spaces, systems and structures provide inspirational possibilities. With speakers including artists, librarians and researchers the afternoon will present a range of projects that intervene in, respond to, or collaborate with a range of libraries both public and academic.

A full programme will be confirmed shortly, but meanwhile speakers include:

Royal College of Art collections available online

Two of the Royal College of Art’s most important collections have been made available to the general public through a new digitisation project which is accessible through the Visual Arts Data Service (VADS).

The Record of Student Work is a rare collection, containing over 30,000 slides of student work, which dates back to the 1960s and includes early work by notable College alumni including David Hockney, Tracey Emin, Ridley Scott and Thomas Heatherwick. A comprehensive and unique resource, it provides insight into the early creative processes of some of Britain’s best-known artists and designers, usually captured as they complete their postgraduate studies with installation shots from students’ degree shows.

Notable alumni whose work is represented in this selection include: David Hockney, Zandra Rhodes, Chris Ofili, Tracey Emin, Julien Macdonald, Philip Treacy, Orla Kiely, Harold Offeh and Thomas Heatherwick. These images are a representative sample of the entire collection 1960-2002 and all have been scanned from the original 35mm slides. Senior tutors from each department worked with the Special Collections Manager to identify key students’ work. Once a student was selected, every available slide of their work was digitised to provide a comprehensive picture of their work.

In addition to the Record of Student Work, over a thousand works from the Royal College of Art Collection of Paintings have been digitised and are also being made available through VADS. The Royal College of Art Collection is an invaluable resource of works that represent significant developments in British painting from the middle years of the 20th century to the present. The collection is made up of works donated by Painting graduates and staff. Examples include works by: Edward Bawden, Eric Ravilious, Paul Nash, John Piper, Frank Auerbach, John Minton, Peter Blake, David Hockney, Chris Ofili, Tracey Emin, Dinos Chapman and Sophie von Hellermann.

There's more to the library catalogue.....

.....than just being able to search for books and journals. For example, did you know that you can save your search queries for future reference and set up alerts to be notified when new books are added to stock? No? It’s easy enough to set up. Simply sign-in to the catalogue, run your search as normal and then click on the ‘Save query’ link which appears to the left of the results (just below the search box, in fact). There is then an option to save the query or set up an alert. You can manage your saved queries and alerts by clicking on ‘My Account’ in the top right of the screen.
Ever wondered what the ‘e-Shelf’ link in the top right of the catalogue screen is used for? The e-Shelf is where you can save lists of useful books and journals and then organise them into folders. For example, you might wish to add a list of reading for your module so that you can easily refer back to it and see which books are currently available. To add items to your e-Shelf, make sure you are signed in to the catalogue and then click the little white star which appears next to each result in the results list. The star turns yellow, indicating it has been added. If you click on the e-Shelf link in the top right of the page you can then view and organise all items you have added.

I was lucky enough to go on a visit to the libraries at the Natural History Museum on Friday. They are open to the public (with some restrictions) and the catalogue is online – see the above site for details. The libraries hold some wonderful collections of both images and print materials. The Librarians told me that they are often visited by artists and designers and I will be mentioning the museum to our students as yet another source of inspiration available to them in London.

Some of you may have visited 18 Stafford Terrace, just off Kensington High Street which is a perfectly preserved Victorian home. At the weekend, a tour is given by actor in full Victorian dress and character. For more information, see the link above. I went (for the fourth time!) on Sunday and was interested to see an additional exhibition. See below.

From 24 April to 13 June, Central Saint Martins will be residing at 18 Stafford Terrace to stage Fashionably Curious, a contemporary fashion exhibition within the historic house. Inspired by the curiosities and quirks of the Victorian era, and the current fascination of all things fantastical, this unique interior will play host to a display of contemporary dress.

The exhibition features the works of renowned Central Saint Martin alumni Alexander McQueen, Hussein Chalayan, Mary Katrantzou and Jonathan Saunders, as well as Stephen Jones and Gieves & Hawkes.

During the exhibition, tours will continue as normal on Wednesdays and the weekends. The format and content of the tours will remain the same, and a catalogue will be available to guide visitors through the exhibits on show within the historic house. There will also be an additional video introduction at the beginning of your visit.

Artist in Residence Programme at Queen Mary Physics Departmen

The Physics department at Queen Mary Univeristy of London has long
history of producing cutting edge research into theoretical physics. It
has been the originator of revolutionary ideas such as string theory and
M-theory and has a history of connecting these new ideas to the
contemporary art world.
The department is searching for a contemporary artist to be resident for
a three month period to produce art inspired by the work of the
department and in collaboration with Dr David Berman.
A background in fine art with an interest in contemporary conceptual art
would be ideal.
The artist will have an office in the department during the residency
and there are funds to cover costs for materials.
The stipend is between £8000-£6000 depending on the experience of the
artist.
Queen Mary has many artists in residence and has an active art
community. The physics department programme is seen as an on going
commitment to interaction with the art world and the artist would be
encouraged to be part of a long term association with the department at
Queen Mary.

I went on visit to the British Library's specialist business centre with Bethan Alexander and our Fashion marketing students. Do have a look at the link above to see the vast range of resources that they hold. The centre is especially good on business start-up which would be useful to a variety of students. Material can be downloaded onto memory sticks and the staff are happy to assist students in their searching. Of course, appropriate ID is needed to access the resources, but all the information is on the website.

I have to admit - my documents were not up to date enough and I was refused a readers card, so I can definitely confirm that the rules are strictly enforced!

I went on a very interesting visit yesterday to the Westminister Archives and the V & A's Art and Design Archive at Blythe House.

The Westminister Centre holds archives for Liberty & Co. and Jaegar. I saw some really wonderful advertising materials. They do have a searchable online catalogue with many digital images and would welcome visits from our students.

Museum of London, Docklands

We had a library planning day at the Museum of London, Docklands yesterday. It is an excellent source of information regarding the history of the Docklands. There is an archive which charts the development and activity of the docks, port and river from 1770 onwards, including trading, industrial relations, river management and docklands regeneration. The archive features over 40,000 photographys of the port and has 10,000 books on port history. There is also a collection of technical drawings. Unfortunately, there is no searchable catalogue at the moment but the archivist would be happy to help students with their projects or even arrange special visits for groups.

As I am sure you know, we now have a new library system. Unfortunately, at the moment, staff cannot renew online. We are waiting for a file from IT which contains all the usernames for staff. Once we have this file, we will be able to input the information into the new library system and staff will once again be able to renew online. Until this happens, staff will have to phone up the library to renew items.

This is a temporary situation and we are hoping that it will be resolved in the very near future.

However, if you send me your username, I can manually put you into the system and you would be able to renew online immediately. You will also have access to Interlibrary loans and reservations.

New library system

We are getting a new library system in August, so this will mean that you will notice a change in the catalogue interface. Among other enhancements, the new system will make it easier to search for online journal articles - an improvement that I think we will all welcome.

The library staff will be practising during the summer, so will be ready for any student/staff questions in September.

Wartime Comestices Archive Launched

The Visual Arts Data Service (VADS) and the London College of Fashion announced a collaboration today that will see the photographic archives of three important cosmetics companies made accessible online for the first time.The archives of Gala, Miner’s and Crystal, three prominent cosmetics companies operating during and after the Second World War, are held at London College of Fashion and have been digitised and made freely accessible through the VADS website.The archives are a valuable resource for the study of the history of cosmetics, advertising photography, fashion promotion and women in the Second World War.During the War when silk was needed for parachutes and stockings disappeared from the shops, Miner’s had particular success with its leg make-up, Miners Liquid Stockings, which many women used to paint their legs and even drew black lines down the back of their legs to simulate the seams. Gala of London was also the first company to introduce lip stick in a tube when they introduced their lipline in 1957.Katherine Baird, Manager of Archives and Special Collections at the London College of Fashion said: “The history of cosmetics is a subject area poorly served by archives to date, and this archive is a valuable addition."“The war and immediate aftermath, was an important period for the development of package design and also for the development of women's economic independence and consequently their image. Craft Council Library

The Crafts Council Research Library will be open as usual from Wednesday 17th June. Our opening hours are Wednesday and Thursday, 10am-5pm.

Researchers from fashion designers at Stella McCartney and Reiss mix with advertising agencies working for Old Speckled Hen beer, new and established makers and A level students to use the extensive resources at the Crafts Council Research Library.

The Research Library is the only resource dedicated completely to contemporary craft. Combined with the Information Service available online, by email and by phone, the Research & Information Team can help a variety of users find what they need.

Dorothy Hogg MBE, jeweller-in-residence at the V&A in 2008/09 said “I spent time at the start of my residency in the Crafts Council Research Library. I was assisted with access to books, catalogues, recorded interviews and images of makers work in the welcome quiet one hopes to find in a library.”

Work from the Crafts Council Collection is also on display in the library, providing a creative and inspiring environment to flip through design magazines, exhibition catalogues, or search our directories for a maker.

How to visit

The Research Library is on the 1st Floor of the Crafts Council offices on Pentonville Road. The Library is accessible by a lift and stairs and our building has ramp access.

servers which run Digimap.
In order to minimise disruption to the service, there will be two short periods
of downtime on this day (rather than a single long period of downtime) These
periods of downtime will be between 08:00 - 08:45 AND 17:30 - 20:00. All
Digimap Collections will be unavailable during these times.
EDINA will also be making use of the 'at risk' period on Tuesday 14 April 2009,
to carry out further essential maintenance. All Digimap Collections will be

We felt that it had been a useful iniative, which had really improved communication with our Schools, and would be something that other university libraries would be interested in doing.

Student use of library furniture

While we are happy for the students to use library desks to spread out when doing projects, it is really unacceptable for them to cut without cutting mats, and to use spray mount. The desks are becoming badly scratched and stained.

It has recently been discovered that humans are closer to higher primates than was previously thought. This exhibition brings together a group of artists who actively question the authority of the human species over all other animal species.
Four artists present specially commissioned projects developed with animals. Nicolas Primat presents his work involving interactions with tribes of monkeys and bonobo apes, in which he reveals the hidden non-human primate in all of us. Kira O’Reilly, in her special performance for Cornerhouse and installation, Falling Asleep with a Pig, allows a glance at an intimate relationship between her and a female pig known as Deliah. Antony Hall’s interactive work, ENKI experiment 3, explores communication between visitors and a Black Ghost Knife Fish. Ruth Maclennan presents, The Hawk and the Tower, a film that looks at people, the city and the landscape from the perspective of a ‘hawk-camera.’
Also included in the exhibition are Rachel Mayeri’s Primate Cinema, which casts human actors in the role of mating non-human primates and Beatriz da Costa’s PigeonBlog, which investigates the military use of homing pigeons.

I went to this exhibition on Sunday. It is quite a small collection but remarkable as it is curated and mounted by the Moscow Kremlin Museums.

This exhibition illustrates Russia’s relationship with her past and with Europe through two centuries of men’s court dress.
The Moscow Kremlin Museums, together with the Armoury Chamber, form Russia’s oldest national treasury, founded in 1806. Their collections include the dress and regalia worn by the emperors and the Russian court from the 1720s to 1917. Chelsea College of Art and Tate Libraries

I recently visited the Chelsea College of Art and Design library and the Tate Library. They are both part of SCONUL ACCESS - although the Tate only allows staff and PHDs to borrow. However, any member of the public can register as reader and have reference access.

Both libraries have amazing collections and are happy to have our students visit. I would always advise a phone call first since most materials have to be retrieved from storage.

Tate Modern presents an exhibition by one of the world’s most famous and best-loved artists, Mark Rothko. This is the first significant exhibition of his work to be held in the UK for over 20 years.
Tate Modern's iconic 'Rothko Room' works are reunited for the first time with works from Japan. The Seagram Murals were originally commissioned for The Four Seasons Restaurant in the Seagram Building New York.
Rothko’s iconic paintings, composed of luminous, soft-edged rectangles saturated with colour, are among the most enduring and mysterious created by an artist in modern times. In the exhibition his paintings glow meditatively from the walls in deep dark reds, oranges, maroons, browns, blacks, and greys.
The exhibition will also focus on other work in series, such as the Black-Form paintings, his large-scale Brown and Grey works on paper, and his last series of Black on Grey paintings, created in the final decade of his life from 1958-1970.

The National Art Library at the Victoria and Albert Museum is a majorpublic reference library. Its strength lies in the range and depth of its holdings of documentary material concerning the fine and decorativearts of many countries and periods. It is also the curatorial departmentfor the art, craft and design of thebook, details of which can be found in the Prints & Books collection.

Images of Medieval Manuscripts from Leeds University Library

Some 685 digital images from our medieval illuminated manuscripts are now
available online: http://ludos.leeds.ac.uk/collection/medmss. Twenty-seven
different manuscripts have been drawn on for the project, including four from
Ripon Cathedral Library (held at Leeds University Library). Apart from the Hours
associated with the Bedford Master Workshop (Brotherton Collection MS 1),
the Genealogical History Roll (Brotherton Collection MS 100) and one small
fragment, which have been photographed in full, the manuscripts are
represented selectively, but all miniatures and all significant illuminated borders
and initials have been included.

We have just been successful in securing £100K from the Joint Information Systems Committee for a one-year project to create a digital Olympics Archive. Our archive will be called East London Lives – a unique digital archive of ‘London 2012’. It will record and reflect on the process of social change in East London arising from hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games, focusing on two of the key Olympic promises - social regeneration and health and wellbeing.
It is a joint bid between three parts of our university - the London East Research Institute (Professor Gavin Poynter and Dr Iain Macrury), the Institute of Health and Human Development (Professor Adrian Renton) and Library and Learning Services. Our partner is the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council.

This exhibition explores the creative connections between the two worlds of fashion and sport. Recent developments have seen an increasing number of collaborations and hybrids, from fashion designers producing collections with sportswear brands to sports personalities heading fashion campaigns or even designing their own collections. Web 2.0 technology has been an exciting development in the information world for a while now, but for the first time Arlis is holding a short course on the topic, offering a national overview, an insight into ways in which art and design lecturers are engaging students with the technology, and some practical sessions run by art librarians. Although aimed primarily at art and design librarians, this course has plenty to offer librarians in all subject areas, and will stimulate ideas for your own work with students.

This conference is about the status and role of early printed images in Britain
in books and elsewhere. There is an international line up of speakers.
Printed images were widely circulated in early modern Britain and they provide
vivid and revealing evidence about many aspects of the culture of the period.
Yet only recently have historians begun to give them proper attention, and
this conference will be one of the first to draw out their significance. Themes
will include the importance of printed images for the history of the Reformation
and post-Civil War politics, the emergence of new genres like topographical
engraving and mezzotint, and the place of prints in the developing consumer
market. Speakers will include Kevin Sharpe, Anthony Griffiths, John King, Justin
Campion, Michael Hunter and Alex Walsham.
The conference is linked to, and will showcase, an innovative project in the
form of the AHRB-funded British Printed Images to 1700 project, which will
make available pre-1700 prints in the British Museum and selected material
from the V&A and other collections.

Royal Academy of Arts Collections Online: Historic Books, Archives, Works of Art

We are delighted to announce the launch of the new version on the online catalogue to the Royal Academy of Arts Permanent Collections: www.racollection.org.uk

The RA Collections website enables you to search and explore the RA’s collections of paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, historic books, archives, historic photographs and plaster casts. There are specific search screens for searching the works of art, books or archive collections, or if you select Search all the Collections you can search across everything in the collection at once.

It is also possible to browse the collections via the Names A-Z and Academicians links. Clicking on the Academicians link brings up an alphabetical list of all past and present Royal Academicians. Clicking on a name in the list brings up a Member’s page containing biographical information about the artist or architect, including any posts they held within the RA, plus a list of all the works of art, historic books and archival documents relating to them in the Collection.

The Names A-Z section lists the names of all the people and organisations associated with objects, books and documents in the Collections. Clicking on a name will take you to the page that displays all the records in the Collection associated with that person or institution.

As well as searching and browsing the Collection, you can explore different themes within the Collections or find out what works from the Collection are currently on display in the Royal Academy via the Topics section.

Group for Learning in Art and Design Conference

The GLAD (Group for Learning in Art and Design) conference 2008 will take place at Nottingham Trent University on the 8th/ 9th September. The theme of the conference is 'The Student Experience in Art and Design Higher Education: Action for Change. The conference will draw on themes identified at the Cambridge conference in 2007and explore implications for future policy and practice in art and design education. Keynote speakers will explore what art and design can learn from student surveys, as well as the future challenges and opportunities facing the sector.
